Responsibilities of a Chaperone

  1. Arrive at school by the designated time.
  2. Make sure the band members are dressed and ready to go on time.
    1. Make sure the uniforms are complete and on correctly.
    2. Make sure that the girl’s hair is braided/or under their hat.
  3. Direct the band members to the stadium/bus/performance when ready.
  4. Make sure that the band members get their instruments on the bus/truck.
  5. Provide water (jugs and water bottles) for the band members.
  6. Keep an eye on the band members so that the Instructor can concentrate on what he/she needs to do.
  7. Bus Rides:
    1. Count heads before leaving school and before leaving stadium/performance to insure everyone is accounted for.
    2. Maintain volume on the bus. This could distract the bus driver.
    3. Make sure band members are in their seats.
    4. Make sure all trash is picked up before leaving the bus. Bring trash bags.
    5. Make sure that nothing is thrown in or out of the bus.
    6. First bus usually carries Seniors and Juniors and Band Instructor.
    7. Second bus usually carries Sophomores and Freshmen.
    8. Second bus sometimes plays Truth or Dare – Sitting in the back of the bus may be necessary.
  8. Marching in a Parade
    1. Walk by Drum Major to warn them of holes, horse or other animal droppings, and when turning a corner.
    2. Position chaperones at four corners or one in front and one in back.
    3. Be prepared for students to have problems and need to drop out of the parade.
    4. Christmas Light Parade – bring packing tape to help secure the lights to the instruments and the students.
  9. Hotel Stays:
    1. Reinforce/review the rules with the band members before you leave.
    2. Assign Chaperones to be responsible for room/rooms of band members.
    3. No girls go in boys room and no boys go in girls room
    4. If no security is provided at night, tape can be placed on the band member’s doors to show if they leave their room at night.
    5. Chaperone must accompany band members while at the swimming pool.
    6. No band members are to leave their room after lights out.
    7. Perform a bed check at lights out time.
    8. Make wakeup calls &/or go to room for wake up call. Students must come to the door at wake up call.
  10. Trip Sightseeing:
    1. Band members will be accompanied by a chaperone at all times while sightseeing.
    2. Groups will be divided with at least two chaperones per sightseeing group.

General Rules:

      1. All TPS rules are to be obeyed by the band members and chaperones.
      2. No PDA – Public Display of Affection.
      3. Respect must be given to the band members and adults.
      4. Keep an eye out for the “couples”.
      5. Items handy to have:
    • Safety pins.
    • Lint rollers/tape.
    • Scissors.
    • Bobby pins.
    • Hair ties.
    • Needle and thread.
    • Shout Wipes.
